News July 1st

30/6/2013

From today I'll be putting general news in this 'blog'. Men's golf results and matters pertaining only to the men's golf will continue to be in the 'Men's golf' blog.  Just for interest the word 'blog' is a contraction of the words  'web log'.  That is 'web' as in 'World Wide Web' - that you can see in web addresses such as www.bowralgolfclub.com.au. The 'log' is a diary as in 'ship's log' So there is a long explanation about a short word..
Today we woke to clear skies with a bright light in the sky. No rain at last. During the last week we had just over 200mm of rain measured at the green keeper's shed which necessitated the closing of the course for the last week.  Inspections were carried out every day last week and then a decision was taken to close the course through to this Tuesday.  This morning Damian (course superintendent) and I walked the course for an hour and given continued fine weather we expect to have the course open again (no carts)  on Wednesday.

The rain or rather the intensity and duration of the rain does cause some damage on the course. Below there is a slide show showing parts of the course and what happened during the last week.

The damage on the 9th and also  the ephemeral waterway on the 16th will be repaired and this time it will be turfed with turf cut from the area between the 10th and 11th. Part of the ephemeral waterway on 16th that was turfed (donated) survived well. The ephemeral waterway on the 15th also is ok and the coring from the green renovation, scheduled for Tuesday the 17th September this year, will be spread in the area. As can be seen from the finished work on the 13th waterway we will end up with a grassed spoon drain that can be mown through.

The annual  match against Moss Vale for the Oxley Plate is scheduled for Sunday 21st August at Bowral. Tee times have been reserved from 11:30.  An entry sheet will be posted on the notice board this week.

Work on the Telstra tower site  behind the 9th tee has started with the entrance crossing constructed and some concreting done.

Our Leaning Tower. Some new direction signs are being installed to lessen possible confusion from visitors in finding their way around the course. Visitors are given maps but the signs also help. You may have noticed the sign post to the 12th tee leaning - especially in the mornings. As the low sun strikes it on the north eastern side that side expands relative to the other side and the post leans away from the sun.
